Last week I wrote about the first two parts of the amazing series being published in the Washington Post (reg. required) about growing up as a gay teen in the U.S. The series began in Oklahoma and continued this Saturday (part III) and today (part IV) by following a black lesbian teen in Newark, NJ, whose girlfriend was stabbed to death for turning down a man's proposition and telling him she was gay. Definitely print/bookmark this series -- it is a GREAT piece of journalism. A quick sample:
"What is gay America? It is this 17-year-old who lives with her mother and two teenage sisters in an apartment on working-class Eckert Avenue. There is a Bible on the coffee table and fish frying in the kitchen. With no cell phone to receive text messages, Felicia keeps her folded love notes in a shoe box. I just want to kick it with you, one girl writes."
