Invasion of the Podcasters

Posted by anastasia on 12-30-2004

Yesterday I blogged about Vlogging — today it's Podcasting. The first story is from the BBC and explains Podcasting through the perspective of one of its biggest advocates: Adam Curry. Yes. That Adam Curry with the feathered mane who used to be one of the original VJs on MTV and has been doing Web stuff ever since. Curry recently created a piece of software called Ipodder, which takes audio from the web and brings it all the way down to your iPod. So just as Vlogging is becoming a way for anyone to make films and put them online, Podcasting allows anyone to be a DJ and basically create their own pirate radio online.

In a separate article published in The Boston Phoenix, media critic Dan Kennedy also talks about Adam Curry's latest effort, and characterized Podcasting as "the latest example of how the dot-com crash of 2000 liberated the Internet from the unrealistic expectation of instant wealth, fostering a new climate of grassroots innovation." His bigger question is whether technology like Podcasting is encouraging people to withdraw from the national debate:

"As promising as podcasting may be as a way of liberating us from the likes of Clear Channel and FCC chair Michael Powell, there’s a danger that too many of us will be withdrawing from the national conversation still further. You can program your own head. But you’ve got to know what your head needs."

My big question is will teens or are teens out there podcasting? Isn't it kind of like those cassette recordings you used to make with your friends where you pretended to have your own radio show?
