The Cluster Album

Posted by chet on 11-17-2005

I think Warner Music's new "e-label" Cordless is doing the right thing with it's new venture. It asks a timely question: why does an album need to be 12 tracks? I really believe there is room for change. It seems natural to me that consumers (especially young consumers) will respond to a less sporadic (1-3 years between albums)and more concise supply of material from their favorite artists. So Cordless artists will release small "clusters" of songs (3 or so) a few times a year. And you can only get it on the web.

The other purpose of the e-label is to cost-effectively break new artists, grow a fan base, then bump them up to traditional major label status. You might think of it as the farm team of the music industry. Check out more on the e-label story here.
