Alterna-Spring Break
Posted by karell on 03-22-2006Note from Anastasia: Karell will be posting once a week during my "hiatus" beginning April 1.
When I was in college, spring break usually meant two things: 1) getting to sleep in and 2) catching up on the only soap opera I've ever watched, "All My Children." I usually didn't have enough money to go on some super wild crazy trip to Cancun or Daytona Beach, and frankly, I was never really interested in it.
If I was in college now, I would probably be one of the thousands of students seeking a meaningful project or volunteer opportunity for spring break. According to the U.S. Newswire, "more than 10,000 students will be devoting their energies to cleaning up beaches and mucking out houses destroyed by last year's Gulf Coast hurricanes."
And more:
"Over the past decade, the 'alternative break' movement — through which college students perform community service projects during their vacation time — has taken off. Thousands of students each year build houses for low-income families, care for AIDS patients and tutor inner-city children. Last year's devastating hurricanes, and the great need of communities from New Orleans to Mobile for assistance in the rebuilding effort, has added a new urgency and enthusiasm to the movement."
There's even a whole alternative spring break section on mtv.com. I particularly like the section on the top 10 ways to get active in your own backyard.
Anyone out there know any teens or college students volunteering for spring break?
