Teens Not Buying Booze Online
Posted by anastasia on 08-10-2006A couple of studies in USA Today caught my eye. First, TRU released research that says teens aren't rushing to buy alcohol online despite the Supreme Court ruling that made it easier for wineries to ship products to customers in a different state. TRU found that "2% of youths ages 14-20 reported having purchased alcohol online, and that 12% reported having a friend who had ordered alcohol online." Leave it to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy spokesman to give this inane warning to parents: "…the drug dealer who used to lurk in the seedy side of town is now just an e-mail or a URL away from your home."
The other study was from the American Psychological Association saying that zero tolerance policies in schools basically don't work and that "kids feel less safe and perform worse academically in schools with high suspension or expulsion rates, even taking into account students' income levels." It's the old "bringing aspirin to school is not the same as bringing cocaine" argument, which makes perfect sense to me.
