Second Life Style
Posted by chet on 09-26-2006I spent an hour or so last night looking at the fashion trends of Second Life. I am fascinated times one thousand. How amazing is it that there are blogs focused solely on the topic of fashion on Second Life? And according to this recent article in the Wall Street Journal, there are also fashion designers trying to make a living on the site.
And while I would not have guessed that your average Second Lifer would be someone with acute fashion sense, maybe the tides are changing? Everybody, whether they admit it or not, is into fashion. It's just that the last time I spent a decent chunk of time in the world, it was mostly like a cheesy Matrix themed club night mixed with those wearing the default outfit. It's a bit different now.
I've been asking people about their opinion of Second Life lately, and most I know are only vaguely aware of it. Of course, that's a limited sample of twenty-somethings, but really - there are only 700 thousand users worldwide, with 40 percent living outside the U.S. Second Life is still small.
So why is a company like Adidas creating a presence on the site? I really think it's a media play first and foremost. It's good PR. However, I was quite impressed to see that the American Apparel store has sold 4,000 styles. To me that is a success. And wouldn't you know it – like a true virtual world - there is already fashion counterfeiting.

Great article in today's NYTimes Magazine (Sunday, 10/1) about launching a virtual brand in SL.
