Mobile Jam Fest
Posted by chet on 12-13-2006As predictions of trends for 2007 start blasting off, it is clear that mobile will be a very big deal next year. The biggest trend of 2006, user-generate-content, recently made a big entrance to mobile, with the YouTube/Verizon deal. Mobile 2.0 is growing as a buzz word as the social web extends beyond the laptop. 2007 will see the first launch of MySpace service through major carriers.
And with all of this, it’s nice to see new youth-oriented cultural projects coming up around the growing mobile trend. If you haven't checked out the Mobile Jam Fest up in Toronto, now is a good time. It's an interesting and first of its kind international short film festival directed at youth that "fuses film, music, connectivity, interactivity, awareness and education," and it's in the final voting phase for the next few weeks.
I like this concept. It’s getting youth producing, directing, acting and interacting in their own two-minute films. Everything is uploaded online. Over 100 videos were received from all over the world. But the coolest part is the mobile integration. In Canada, you can stream the videos to your handset, and vote for them. You can also vote from your mobile during the finale party on December 21 (featuring Lupe Fiasco).
Look for more of these mobile-integrated events and festivals in the new year.
