Still Pretty In Pink

Posted by anastasia on 04-16-2007

Molly RingwaldFriday night I went to see "Pretty in Pink" on the big screen at the Castro Theater. I couldn't convince anyone to go with me, so I just went alone (and of course ran into a bunch of my friends from Current TV). There were actually quite a few teens in the theater who I swear I heard sniffle during the scene where Andie tearfully tells her terrycloth bathrobe wearing dad that mom is not coming back!

You forget about how totally cute Molly Ringwald was until you see her pout and lip biting move on a huge screen. I also think you realize how much class was an issue in the 80s. John Hughes was far from subtle with his train tracks (Andie lived on the wrong side) and his depiction of the Steff and the rest of the hard partying richies. What I didn't realize was that there was an original ending in which Duckie and Andie actually get together, but that it flopped during test screenings and was changed at the last minute. It makes sense when you rewatch Blane say, "I believed in you. You just didn't believe in me." Yes, she did, Blane! And while the DIY prom dress making scene was very empowering, I agreed with the Current TV gang that it just wasn't super flattering and left Andie sort of shapeless.

Since it is prom season, what were your favorite prom movies/scenes? (hint: this screening of "Pretty in Pink" was part of a tripple feature that also included "Carrie" and "Prom Night").

Mine:
Lindsay Lohan as "Mathlete" prom queen in "Mean Girls"
The choreographed weird prom dance in "She's All That"
Drew Barrymore's triumphant prom return in "Never Been Kissed"

Yours?

OMG! When drew takes that egg to the face in "Never Been Kissed" –I'm done for. Breaks my heart every time. Too real.

My number one fave movie prom moment is 10 Things I hate About you– when bianca punches that guy in the face. :)

Might have to agree with the "Never been kissed".
Just wanted to add that I just watched "Pretty in Pink" on tv this weekend while flipping through the channels. I thought the same thing about the dress. :)

Maybe the concept is that we're supposed to feel sorry for the Molly Ringwald character for being poor. If she can sew her own prom dress and it looks great, then it's one less reason to feel sorry for her.

"Not Another Teen Movie" has the best prom ever. It makes fun of every scene from every John Hughes prom movie and the more you remember from his movies, the harder you laugh at NATM.

The "Prom Tonight" song? I mean, COME ON! Classic.

The fact that she chooses Blane over Ducky has haunted my dreams since I saw this movie in elementary school. Who - ever, for any reason at all, ever - would choose BLANE over DUCKY? By name ALONE you should choose Ducky. Every time. The fact that there is an alternative ending out there almost makes it worse.

    Sigh.
