Note from Anastasia: Kate is back with a second post! More about Kate (a Ypulse teen contributor): Kate is a lover of film, literature, swimming, cartoons, humor, long walks, bears, and donkeys. She likes to write, make cartoons, and has developed a passion for video. Other times she just likes to be with her family and friends, swim, read, or sleep.
There are days where I'll be walking through the crowded halls of my school and I'll hear "Those shoes are mine, betch!" or "You can't text message breakup after two years!" Is this a dialogue from a heated adolescent argument? No, they're just quotes from one of the internet's biggest fads: Kelly.
Kelly is a fashion-obsessed, potty-mouthed valley girl whose music videos revolve around getting what she wants. Those who have not seen the videos sometimes ask, "So? There are plenty of spoofs of spoiled teen girls who like to shop. What makes this so special?" The main novelty of Kelly is that she really isn't a teen girl. The person portraying her is actually an adult character actor named Liam "Kyle" Sullivan. Sullivan has appeared in popular TV shows such as "Alias" and "Gilmore Girls," but is really famous for his online skits (which can be found on liamshow.com). The most popular Kelly video is "Shoes" in which our heroine splurges on foot wear and throws a tantrum to a techno beat. There was a less famous, but equally ridiculous sequel called "Txt Message Breakup," where she chews out her ex boyfriend, who dumped her via texting.
Although, the "Kelly" videos have been around for almost a year, her fifteen minutes are not up in high schools. A friend of mine recently told me, "Everyone is still obsessed with the 'Shoes' thing at my school!" At my school, the quoting craze from the videos has died down since winter, but warped profanity like "deck" and "betch" are still in our hallway vocabulary. I even know some teens who have friended Kelly on her Myspace, where her songs "Shoes," "Txt Message Breakup," and the most recent "Lemme Borrow that Top" are posted. Even though "Lemme Borrow that Top" has no video by Liam Kyle Sullivan dressed in drag, plenty of fans jumped on it for him. The new song has been acted out by teenagers in their homes and even dubbed in clips from The Lion King and Kingdom Hearts.
