Ypulse Essentials: Scion In Gaia, Disney Couture, Cabbage Patch Kids Turn 25

Posted by anastasia on 06-19-2007

Note from Anastasia: I'm taping an interview for an upcoming feature on CBS's "The Early Show" to promote Totally Wired tomorrow morning. Yay! It's my first national network news appearance. This means I probably won't post. Tomorrow night I'm speaking about teens and mobile at a panel for Women in Telecom. Thursday I'm spending the day at Yahoo! presenting to their marketing team and learning about Yahoo! Teachers. All to say, I'll try to squeeze a post in, but most likely not until Friday. The good news is that Chet is at What Teens Want and will be posting his summary of the event!

avatarslide.jpgPeople and their avatars (if you haven't gone through this New York Times, reg. required, slideshow featuring gamers and their avatars. Check it out.)

- Scion pulls into Gaia Online (Gaians can now pimp their Scions and Nicktropolis is boasting 4 million registered users) (press release)

- Could this be the college application of the future? (CollegeSupplement.com hopes so - it will be interesting to see what, if any, legal issues arise from candidates using video resumes)

- Tough Times (cool Irish site designed to support teens through the "tough times")

- High-end Disney (The L.A. Times, reg. required, on the success of Disney couture)

- Cabbage Patch Kids turn 25 (they're Cabbage Patch twixters! God I feel old.)

- My Super Sweet 16 mobile movie (premieres on Verizon V Cast TV June 29 before it airs on MTV) (Media Life Magazine, 3rd item)

- Online video explodes (especially for guys: "Among young adult males 18 to 24, 35 percent report using online video at least once a day, and 80 percent report watching online video at least once a week. In all age-groups, males are more regular viewers of online video. Among females 18 to 24, weekly use of online video is 53 percent versus the 80% for males" Plus YouTube to take over the world!) (press release) (News.com)

P.S. Check out my post about USA Today's story on teens chatting about their drug use online over at Totally Wired.

    RE "Online video explodes"

YouTube is one of the best websites of all time.

I hope it doesn't change much.

There are lawsuits by Viacom and others against YouTube claiming that YouTube is required by law to check each video for copyrighted material before it displays.

The public will lose access to millions of great videos which the copyright owner doesn't even mind being at YouTube if a judge makes a lousy decision and orders YouTube to pre-screen each video.

The owners of blogs and message-boards don't have to pre-screen all the text of their visitors to make sure the text isn't copyrighted. YouTube shouldn't have to pre-screen, either.

Hi Anastasia, thanks for your note about CollegeSupplement.com. I'd love to hear any and all feedback from you and your readers. We spent much time speaking with high school students, admissions professionals and guidance counselors to develop a robust online resource that brings value to each, available at no cost. We know however that online resources need to be quite dynamic, driven by user experience and input. Please share any and all thoughts so we can continue to improve our site so it's most helpful to our users. Hope the Early Show taping went well. Thank you, Steve Metzman, Founder & CEO, CollegeSupplement.com
