Ypulse Quote

Posted by anastasia on 06-05-2007

Hostel III'm going to try this as a new type of post. Basically if I come across a really insightful or provocative quote, I'll post it. Today's comes from L.A. Times critic Patrick Goldstein on the "Hostel II" posters. He kind waffles in the piece (reg. required) over whether this is fan boy art for hard core Comic-Con horror kids or part of the "torture porn" trend a la "Captivity."

The next time you see a "Hostel: Part II" poster, perhaps you'll ponder for a moment why so many of us get a kick out of movies in which kids are gruesomely hacked to death yet so few of us will bother to look at the carnage when it's real kids in a real war. It must be why they call the movies escapist art. When it comes to real gore, we like to turn away.

He also mentions an essay by Joss Whedon I somehow totally missed passionately speaking out against the "Captivity" marketing campaign — definitely worth reading, from the man who brought us "Buffy." Also, check out his letter to the MPAA at the end of Jill Soloway's piece on the Huffington Post.

J.T. Petty’s S&MAN (pronounced Sandman) is a really interesting and more than a little disturbing investigation of horror and its fans. It played at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and I haven’t heard anything of it since but it is worthwhile tracking down.
