I stumbled across a press release about an L.A. teen using his 16th birthday party to throw a big bash benefiting the homeless. From the release:
With 90,000 plus homeless adults and youth living in Los Angeles, several companies, shelters and outreach programs have been put in place to support a growing dilemma occurring daily within our communities. Culver City High School student Saleem Thompson, 15, decided to host his 16th birthday bash and do something different with extending invites for friends, teachers, parents and teens all cross Los Angeles to come out, celebrate life and give back.
More info here.
I also love this: Youth produced Bump Records (a project of the Bay Area Video Coalition) will be distributing its music digitally.

This may be becoming a trend. My daughter turned sixteen in April. Instead of presents, she asked her friends to contribute to a money tree for Christian missions and relief work to Darfur. She raised over $150. I told a friend about her idea and she shared it with her family. Their daughter, 13, announced last week that instead of presents, she would like to have everyone bring supplies so that they can make shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child.
