I stumbled upon this blog post from the Boston Herald's website with a contrarian take on Soulja Boy's musical abilities. What's interesting is the blogger's summary of his "promotional feats":
- He writes his name on his sunglasses, so if people ever forget who he is, a reminder is readily available.
- Before he was signed, he purposely mistitled his songs to resemble the most downloaded songs of the moment. That way, when a user went to download "In the Club," for example, they were instead introduced to Soulja Boy [pretty sneaky].
- Viral marketing is built into his full name: Soulja Boy Tellem and the title of his debut album, "Souljaboytellem.com," which sold 36,000 copies on its first day.
- And, of course, he's got a dance. Nevermind that the dance is silly, simple and kind of jacks three other already established dances. It's a dance [not everyone has a dance. I can't remember the last dance that broke through at this level].

Soulja Boy's music is not that great, but he is a marketing genius and that's why he debuted number 1 on hip hop charts this week and number 4 overall.
