Ypulse Essentials: Branded Widgets, Jesus Dolls, Zipit

Prom Queen'Prom Queen' goes international (heading to France and Japan with revamped versions for local audiences) (L.A. Times, reg. required)

- Branded widgets (this is basically like the Jones Soda slide show getting fans of brands or artists to promote them through widgets on social networking sites...and giving these widget makers a business model. Plus AdWeek offers contrasting case studies of Target and Wal-Mart's efforts on Facebook) (San Jose Mercury News) (AdWeek)

- Disney music envy (Nick tries to compete with its own artists like The Naked Brothers Band...btw make sure your tweens don't Google them alone!) (AdAge.com, reg. required)

- Jesus Christ (Superhero. The New York Times Sunday Magazine's Consumed column on Jesus dolls. Plus churches are using Halo 3 to attract teen guys and young men to church causing Christian ethicists to scratch their heads. Thanks Meredith!) (New York Times, reg. required)

- iPod moment (for newspapers? Interesting column by Jeff Jarvis on how the iPod and iPhone could be the new way for people to get their news)

- The Radiohead model (will it only work for bands with massive loyal fan bases? or will it threaten the already threatened music biz) (AdAge.com, reg. required)

- Teen paparazzi (this story depressed me) (New York Times, reg. required)

- 'Friday Night Lights' (in real life. Local TV broadcasting high school football games. Speaking of...what did you think of the premiere? I loved it all except for the murder...) (Broadcasting & Cable)

- Zipit (I met these guys at Digital Life, where they seemed to have a very popular booth. The site, while very cool to look at, uses way too much Flash...I also wonder why teens would use a device to message each other separate from their cell phones?)

P.S. A reminder to my Boston readers: I will be giving my Totally Wired talk at the BPL Brighton Branch tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. Please come out and say hi...

The premiere of FNL was awesome. The murder also bothered me. It seemed a little over the top.

Did you see the online version that was online before the episode aired?

They originally had Landry hit the attacker with a bottle while he was attacking Tyra.

But they edited it in the broadcast so Landry did it while the attacker was walking away.. and thus not in self defense.

while perhaps that makes more sense in the way they freaked out... it still seems like a really large story line for a show that does small stories really well.

I guess it might just be a symptom of the show getting bad ratings.

Hi Stefan. I watched it live and then watched it again online (after it aired so it was the broadcast version). There has been a lot of buzz online that the murder plot was a ratings ploy...As a fan of the smaller stories as well, I hope not, and I hope they clean it up quickly.
