Ypulse Essentials: Dump Soda, Down With UGC, 'Gossip Girl' No. 1 On iTunes

American Idol gift cardsThere really is a gift card for everything ("American Idol" gift cards. Plus even more holiday spending data from eMarketer)

- We don't need another dance show (you were supposed to read that with the Tina Turner Mad Max music in your head. Randy Jackson will host yet another dance competition show on MTV) (New York Post)

- Dump soda (new global campaign against the soda industry....And Coke does GOOD in Africa) (Canada.com)

- Plum TV disputes Post story (the network for the young & the wealthy says it's doing just fine - I posted a link to the layoff story in last week's Essentials) (Mediabistro)

- Down with ugc (BusinessWeek says professional content is back "in" online. I don't think ugc is going away anytime soon, especially the viral stuff or videos meant for family and friends.)

- Taking parental controls to the next level (screen shots from Vista and the new OS operating system. I wonder how long it will take for teens to disable them...Plus CBS did a whole internet safety feature on "the secret lives of teens." What's funny is that teens' secret live are really not so secret any more when they post about them online) (News.com)

- 'Gossip Girl' (gets a lot of ink in The New Yorker. And is the number one series downloaded from iTunes) (fimoculous)

P.S. Check out my latest post "No Teacher Left Behind" at Totally Wired and have a very happy Thanksgiving! Ypulse will return on Monday morning.

Love the post on the gift cards. Retailers are finally seeing this IS the best way to tap into minors. iTunes set the bar once they became a staple at Target. Four years ago, there was no possible way I could get children to purchase things online. You take away the 'credit card' and replace it with gift cards (especially ones that can be used online) and it's a whole new ballgame.

Did you see that "Dancing With the Stars" spin off-- Carrie Ann Vs Bruno dance competition? Groups of singers & dancers. Kinda like the UK's X Factor, but more focus on dancing... and with Carrie Ann and Bruno.

I'm with you-- NO MORE DANCING/SINGING SHOWS PLEASE. Sheesh.

I'm interested to see how the Idol gift certificates work out. It seems like such a limited-usability gift.
