Melanie Strong, U.S. brand manager for NikeiD, surprised us at the 2007 Mashup when she described the success of NikeiD as a happy accident [my words]. This was one of my favorite case studies (with some of the best slides).

After posting the entire Music Mashup pre-conference we have now made it to the main event. The first part of this video is me rambling on about Ypulse, the conference and where the bathrooms were. You really do get to be a virtual attendee through these videos. Then comes the good part -- it's the beginning of our keynote conversation between danah boyd and Henry Jenkins where they discuss participatory culture and its role in transforming media and marketing beginning with those passionate Harry Potter fans. We'll post the second half next week.

Part two of the Secondhand Serenade case study is now live Learn how Secondhand Serenade and his skilled team brought his music to the public, first on a grassroots level through social networking and Internet radio, then integrating some of the assets of a major label without "selling out." Most importantly, you'll hear how he personally communicated with teenagers to become one of the most successful new acts for this audience.
