'Sabrina' Wasn't The Only Teenage Witch

Posted by anastasia on 03-26-2008

Sabrina the teenage witchI've been digging into my own teen past a lot this week I know, but when I found this article about teen pagans on MTV.com, I couldn't resist. Yes, that same year I went "into the wild" or moved to Eugene, OR, and told my dad I was taking time off, I also told my mom (who is a "Messianic Jew," i.e. born again Christian) that I had become a Wiccan. I joined a coven, addressed diary entries to the Goddess and participated in a few rituals. I think my own built in cynicism about religion in general kept me from completely embracing paganism, but I definitely dabbled. And you know what? Despite how stereotypically Pagans or Wiccans are often portrayed, I found it to be a welcoming feminist spirituality that emphasizes a connection with nature and the philosophy of karma.

I also see why it appeals to teens. They have so little control over their lives — yet are being given the message that they are young adults. Old enough to drive, but not to vote. Encouraged to speak out, yet still censored in their high school newspapers. Judeo Christian religion is pretty top down as well — it's about giving it over, asking for guidance, etc. I know I'm way oversimplifying, but what Wicca offers is a way for teen witches to feel like they have some control over their lives. It offers ritual that isn't empty or going through the same motions. Spells are kinda like prayers but with more ritual. From the article:

And what about spells? It is true that these witches cast spells, but not to manipulate others. "Cursing or doing a love spell against somebody's will — that's kind of a no-no," Raven explained, "because it's interfering with another person's free will." Instead, spells often focus on healing and self-improvement — to give a boost to relationships, confidence, finances or grades. There are simple candle spells — "chill out" and "sweeten up" spells — to help end arguments, and even animal-healing spells to help a sick pet.

The article also mentions that there are now of course social networks for Wiccans as well as an online magazine created by youth called Copper Moon. Definitely an interesting youth subculture to know about.

You should check out the Sweep series by Cate Tiernan. They were written in the late 90's to early 00's and are about a high school girl who discovers she's a Wiccan witch with extremely volitile powers. There's the requisite romance with a Wiccan male and the series completely addictive. I think it positively portrays Wicca–I definitely learned a lot about it while reading the series.
