Just back from Toronto where I was having a familiar conversation with fellow bloggers about how Ypulse makes money. I get this question all the time, followed by the suggestion that I become a marketing consultant and create original research. I refer to myself as an "accidental marketer" for a reason — my background is in writing and journalism, not business or marketing. Whatever insight I have that helps marketers is purely instinctual. I also don't like being told what to do (my inner teen rebel) and most consulting tends to be very service oriented unless you're a big ideas guru who can go in and just share your theory on how everything should work. Instead, I've gone the building a media brand mode, which any of you who work for media brands know, may not be quite as lucrative as selling syndicated reports or consulting, but is supported by website and conference sponsors and conference attendees.
